THE BLOCK CHURCH

We all have favorite “things” that provide us comfort and confidence. And there’s nothing wrong with THINGS or what said things might bring us. The issue is when we cannot let go of, lay down, or live without these “things.” Furthermore, and most importantly, when Jesus calls for those things to become second in comparison to our love and radical commitment to Him, that’s when things become “idols” and they must break and bow for us to be His disciples.

We are also taking our cue from the people of God who gave so generously that they were told to stop giving because they had more than enough. Joy is a journey. You don’t just arrive overnight at game changing joy. No, it’s a process of pruning, learning how to navigate pain from others, and beholding Christ as the only true source for sustainable joy.

When you are living in your purpose or on mission, your threshold for pain increases and your rejoicing over success is much more joy-filled. Ultimately, joy is experienced and produced by living a life on mission.

Paul has joy. So what is JOY? Joy is kind of a blend of happiness + peace + contentment = strength. We start to see that over the next several verses. Choosing joy brings energy. Nehemiah wrote "the joy of the Lord is our strength" (Nehemiah 8:10). Its chronic absence makes us weak.
