When we make happiness the goal, it may blind us to our motives. Motives make all the difference in if we are successful in our pursuit of happiness or not. When we give our lives to Jesus we become a new creation. We’re not to identify ourselves by who we were but by who we are now. And water baptism paints that picture. The old has gone and the new has come. Jesus offers us not the road from bad to good, good to better, or worst to great. In our world today it is easy to feel like giving up or to feel discouraged. We don’t have to look far to see situations that are desperate...injustice, gun violence, drug epidemic. It is all around us! There may be situations in your own personal life right now that feel desperate or impossible...a health diagnosis, a financial situation, children that are in bad places, friends or family members that are in desperate need of Jesus. Jesus knows our situation and starts the parable with don’t give up...don’t lose heart! We are called to surrender everything to God and that starts with our heart. Our money is connected to our heart, which is why Jesus says wherever our treasure is, our heart will be there also.
